Recently from long term storage. This cross frame safety bicycle dates to c.1885. Solid 3/4 rubber tyres on the original crescent section rims. Intriguingly the frame appears to have been 'done up' a long time ago and decorated in the paintwork and transfer of Paris Cycles - London in the style of the companies 'Galibier' frame. Whether a past owner thought it was a Paris Galibier and did it in the style or it may have even hung on their workshop wall, who knows? But underneath the old paint is an 1880's solid tyre safety bicycle waiting to be rescued, repaired and ridden again. In fact, the previous owner had every intension of doing that, but only managed the rescued bit of its story. This early bicycle was pulled from a Rag & Bone cart in London about 60 years ago before it was taken for the scrap that morning. He chased him down the road to get it.

The bicycle is remarkably complete. It still has its, slotted cranks, one complete pedal (half of the other), both wheels are 30" inch diameter and the rims are ok, both original hubs (although the rear sprocket is heavily worn and will need to be replaced.) The handlebars are there, but have been shortened ( but can be lengthened.) A saddle frame is on the original saddle post and a lamp bracket with hole to take a plunger brake mechanism.  As for maker? I have a Inkling it may be made by Hillman Herbert & Cooper and one of the original pedal rubbers does show the remains of some name.

A great opportunity for someone looking for an early bicycle project.
