What is a cyclecar ?
Cyclecars have been a passion of mine since I first discovered them back in 1994. A genre of simple lightweight vehicles built from the 19010 to 1920's period. Driven by chains or belts, they either had 3 or 4 wheels and often powered by single or twin cylinder engines, with some even driven by electric motors. They were the epitome of the pioneer spirit at the time. Many were made by amateur constructers in small workshops with limited tools. The craze soon spread and cars were being built in the UK, Europe and the USA with weekly magazines and books given guidance to build your own cyclecar. Manufacturers saw a market to supply builders with the parts needed, from complete rolling chassis' to engines and gearboxes.
Notable makers to first build a cyclecar were Morgan and GN in the UK along with Bedelia in France. The French became prolific builders of cyclecars with many 'one off' machines being made all over rural France in village garages. The larger scale manufacturers had a boom period during the 1920's with companies like Amilcar, BNC, Senechal, Morgan and Salmson, all taking the concept further as mechanical design advanced over time, while still retaining the charm and simplicity of a lightweight car.
In 1994 I was given a copy of 'How to build a cyclecar'. First printed in 1913, it is a handbook and guide for any aspiring cyclecariste giving simple instructions to build your own cyclecar. This little book changed my life. Not only did it prove to be useful in building The Grafton Cyclecar!, a close friend who is a graphic designer scanned this precious book and it has been reprinted for everyone to own a copy
Since then, together with Antar Press, we have started to produce bound volumes of 'The Cyclecar'. A magazine which cyclecar owners, drivers and makers could buy weekly at the time. These are a treasure trove of stories, adverts, ideas and concepts from the world of cyclecars at the time. Rare copies are often in private collections with the odd single copy sometimes appearing for sale online. We are lucky to have access to a complete run of these hard to find magazines and with modern scanning and printing methods, along with lots of time and patience, we are now starting to produce reprints, starting with 'The Cyclecar - Volume 1'.
